From Campfires to Conversations: 2025 Family Retreat

Written by Aislee Berenice Nieves, Senior Program Manager

Each day, I am inspired by the chance to guide Fiver’s year-round programs while also standing alongside our families—helping them discover opportunities in their communities and ensuring they know Fiver is here to support them, wherever the need may be.

This September, our community came together in a beautiful way during our Family Retreat at Camp Fiver, where 23 families joined us for an overnight stay filled with connection, growth, and joy. It was more than just a weekend getaway—it was a moment for families to step fully into the Fiver experience.

Parents and guardians saw camp through their children’s eyes, joining tours led proudly by our Fivers. They immersed themselves in creative and active learning through classes in art, basketball, tennis, volleyball, soccer, and even fishing and boating on the lake. One of the most memorable moments was when our staff—Senior Program Associate, Jesus Cortes, and Educational Program Associate, Anthony Silvera—led an energizing 20-minute movement class that had parents laughing, sweating, and cheering each other on. One parent shared:

“My favorite part was the campfire, because we were able to truly express ourselves.
I realized how open my kids have become thanks to the confidence you’ve given them.”

Equally powerful was a workshop where families explored how to navigate challenging conversations with their children. Through role-playing and open discussion, parents supported one another with honesty, vulnerability, and strength. It was a reminder that our community is not only about fun—it’s also about building the skills and trust needed to face life’s difficult moments together.

For me, this retreat was a vivid reflection of the heart of Fiver: families and youth learning side by side, lifting each other up, and celebrating the power of community. Watching the pride on a child’s face as they introduced their parents/guardians to Camp Fiver traditions—or the laughter echoing from a group of parents trying something new—showed me just how transformative these shared experiences can be.

I am deeply grateful to every family who joined us and to the entire Fiver team who made the retreat possible. Together, we are not only strengthening the bond between parent and child, but also weaving the fabric of a community that believes in possibility, resilience, and joy.

Moments like the Family Retreat remind us why we do this work—because when families grow together, our entire community thrives. With appreciation for all who made it possible, we look ahead with hope and excitement.
