The
Facility: In 1997, Fiver's
Founder, Tom Tucker, purchased 152 acres
of farmland from the Keefe family in Poolville,
a small town in central New York , nearby
to Tom's alma mater, Colgate University
. The Keefe's were grateful to sell the
land to someone committed to using it for
a positive purpose and often visit the property
to tell the Fiver children what it was like
growing up on the farm.
The
camp property includes a lake, a river,
wetlands and woodlands, as well as fields
suitable for a variety of recreational activities.
The 3,500 square foot dining hall is at
the camp's center and offers views of the
entire property including the learning center,
the health center, the horse barn, the athletic
fields, and the swimming pool. Children
live in cabins or platform tents divided
into two units, one for boys and one for
girls. A staff lounge, tennis courts, administrative
office, basketball courts and a waterfront
round out the facility.
Programs:
The Whole
Self program, Fiver's leadership and
character development program, is the core
of the Fiver experience. Fiver values are
woven into all activities offered at camp.

Writing, Environmental Education, Ethical
Decision-Making, Fishing, Football, Hip

During
the evening, campers participate in campfires,
talent shows and large group games. One
hundred and twenty children attend during
each of four sessions for a total of approximately
500 participants throughout the summer.
Children progress through the LEARN, TAP,
LEAD and SERVE programs during their ten
years in the Fiver program. Each program
brings new challenges and develops new skills.
Camp
highlights include a four-day wilderness
camping trip, Ethical Decision-Making class
and culminating debate, Senior Institute
class during which SERVE participants complete
college essays and prepare for the post-high
school transition, low ropes and climbing
wall experience, geo-caching canoe trip
and tours of local colleges.
Supervision:
College-age counselors lead and teach
the Fiver kids while serving as excellent
role models. Counselors are recruited from
Fiver partner organizations and universities
throughout the United States . Several international
staff members complete the counseling team
and provide a global perspective. The summer
staff also includes leadership team members,
activity specialists, lifeguards, nurses,
and kitchen, maintenance and office personnel.
Accreditation:
Each summer, Camp Fiver receives a
permit from the Department of Health prior
to opening our doors to children. Fiver
is also accredited by the American Camp
Association. During our last accreditation
visit in 2006, the visitor shared the following
comments.
“In
15 years of camping I have literally never
seen a more conducive camping environment.
The campers and staff have created a magical
family that beams with spirit and compassion.”
